Treats and Puppies
You have undoubtedly chosen this program because you have decided that you don’t want to rely on carrying around a pocketful of smelly treats for the next fifteen or so years of life with your dog. There is a right way to use treats and a wrong way.
Combined with the Eight-Week Program, this puppy course will help you achieve success in your training. But the transition off of treats will have to wait until later. So in the meanwhile, think of puppy-hood as laying the groundwork, and don’t worry too much about whether you are giving too many treats.
With puppies twenty-four weeks of age or younger, it is especially important to use treats! Puppy training is ALL positive! And scientifically, we know that 98% of puppies learn the quickest when motivated by food rewards. So, no skimping when it comes to puppy training. Use them to reinforce potty in the right place, going into his crate, and so-on.
Later, once your puppy begins formal obedience at twenty-four weeks of age, we will ramp up randomizing and fade out food rewards completely.
